“Sapere aude” is a Latin phrase that can be translated as “Dare to know” or “Dare to think for yourself”.
Given the speed in our daily lives, “sapere aude”, the urge to stop for a while and analyse the things and events around us, seems like a good advice for 2018.
We all know that knowledge is power. But what happens if that knowledge is unreliable? More and more people (with who knows what purposes in mind) try to take advantage of our fears and our preconceptions and feed us fake news. As an example, just have a look over how many quotes are wrongly attributed to Einstein. Or just think about fake advertisements.
With this in mind, don’t be afraid to research the truth, don’t be afraid to question, make sure that the power in your knowledge is real. Don’t be afraid to admit that you are wrong and to correct yourself (after all, virtually all of us once believed Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny to be real).
And don’t limit yourself to fact checking! Use more of your time to learn and understand things that maybe you took for granted until now. How does a flower grow? Why is the grass green? Why and how is the light bulb giving light? Be just as curious as a little child experiencing the world for the first time!
Enjoy the New Year and the new knowledge it brings to your life!
